Catholic Priest beaten by Police in Kerala, India
Alappuzha (Kerala, India), SVM News, November 21, 2007: Roman Catholic Priest was beaten by a Deputy Superintendant of Police (DySP) on November 21 in Alappuzha Town in Kerala, India.
Rev. Father Edward Puthanpurackal was beaten and pushing down by DySP A. Krishnan Kutty on Wednesday before noon. Father fell on the road.
Father Edward is the Kerala Catholic Youth Movement (KCYM) Director of Alappuzha Diocese.
Six other KCYM diocesan leaders also were beaten by the police. President A.B. Justin, who is also former state president, Vice President P.M. Jossi, John Britto, K.B. Jossi, Jaison James and K.B. Job were the victims.
Father Edward and KCYM activists were conducting a new form of strike by rolling on the road from Shavakkotta bridge to Alappuzha Collectorate against not finishing the works of Chethi Bridge since last 19 years.
"Police told them not to allow strike by rolling on the road, but procession. Father Edward and KCYM activists still went ahead with their decision." An official told to the Salem Voice Ministries (SVM) News Service.
Police arrested the people who striked by rolling on the road.
"KCYM organised another rally towards Alappuzha North Police station against beating and arresting the priest and KCYM leaders," a KCYM member told to SVM News.
Vijayapuram Catholic Diocesan Council condemned the beating and arrest of Father Edward Puthanpurackal and KCYM activists.
Paul Ciniraj, President of the Christian Ministers of the Churches in India (CMCI) condemned the incident
