Liberhan Ayodhya Commission extended 41st time in 15 years
New Delhi (India), SVM News, September 2, 2007: The government of India extended another two months to the Liberhan Ayodhya Commission of Enquiry on Friday, August 31. Ministry of Home Affairs issued a notification today to extend the term of the commission up to 31st October 2007.
It is India's longest running commission and again got a two month extension which is its 41st extension in the past 15 years, but still slowing down.
Justice Mohan Singh Liberhan commission was constituted on 16th December 1992 for inquiring into the circumstances that led to Babri Masjid demolition on 6th December 1992. It began sittings from January 1993.
In the last 14 years of hearing, the Commission has held over 350 sittings and examined over 100 witnesses, including 14 defence witnesses, 53 Central Government witnesses and 34 Commission witnesses.
The commission had recorded the statements of former Prime Minister of India P.V. Narasimha Rao, former Deputy Prime Minister L K Advani, former Cabinet Ministers Murli Manohar Joshi and Uma Bharati, former Uttar Pradesh Chief Ministers Kalyan Singh and Mulayam Singh Yadav and Bajrang Dal leader Vinay Katiyar.
Several top bureaucrats and police officials of Uttar Pradesh, former District Magistrate R.N. Srivastava and Senior Superintendent of Police D.B. Roy of Ayodhya had also recorded their statements on the Babri Masjid demolition, which marks the killing of about 3000 Muslims and loss of properties..
The destruction of the mosque was followed by communal riots across the country, in which there was about 3000 people murdered and a huge loss of properties.
Advani has been questioned several times as he led the famous Rath Yatra, and alleged to have mobilizes KarSevaks. He is accused of giving speeches which could have incited KarSevaks to demolish Babri Masjid.
Gauri Advani, daughter-in-law of L.K. Advani, who filed an application before Liberhan Commission had blamed L.K Advani and Vinay Katiyar to have hatched the conspiracy to demolish Babri Masjid. She mentioned that Advani and his family do not follow Hindu religion and this all has been done to get Hindu vote and come to power at centre.
The Commission has completed the hearings and is in the process of writing the report. The 900 pages report which will be tabled in October is supposed to create stir in political galleries.
Commission has cost India around 80 Million rupees so far.
